The Life of an Advocate ATB Leslie Knope

Leslie Knope is the queen of all things Government. So, obviously, we need to use her to describe an advocate’s work life. Maybe you’ll get a better understanding of what we do in our daily jobs!

1. Justice is key.

We work diligently to ensure that our clients receive some level of justice in their cases - whether that’s the triumph of facing an abuser on the stand or receiving restitution for stolen jewelry, we work hard to provide services to victims of crime.

2. We can sometimes work seriously long hours.

Even when we don’t feel good, or we just want to go home, if there’s a court case we need to be present for, we’re there. Trials - especially jury trials - can go longer than a regular work day.

3. Even though we take burnout seriously, sometimes we avoid admitting we need to take a break.

We just really want to help people all the time, so clearly we’re not cranky.. Ever. And we’ve never lashed out at an attorney or LEO… Ever.

4. Our dedication can be a little… scary.

Advocates are compassionate towards our clients, but we can be a little ruthless with anyone who comes for them. But, we recognize when we’re being overzealous and immediately correct it!

5. We enjoy a good snack.

When the going gets tough, a good food break is just what we need. Waffles may or may not be the way to go… Keep in mind we hardly ever get these breaks, though.

6. We inspire ourselves.

No, it’s true. Advocates work together to enact real change - and by working with other advocates or recalling our innovation in solving problems, we can adapt to circumstances in ways people never thought possible.

7. Court typically goes one of two ways.

Typically we have to watch as cases get continued or offenders receive small punishments or attorneys cross examine victims to the point they just want to give up - so we often feel like Leslie. But, sometimes, our clients sit on the stand and answer questions with fire and boldness, or we get a guilty verdict we were hoping for - making us dance like Tom.

8. We’re the literal hype crew.

When they coined the term, they were talking about us. When you need a good pep talk, just come by our office. (Also, there were way too many ‘Leslie hyping up Ann’ GIFs that I could hardly choose)

9. We persist.

Yes, we will keep calling. It’s only because we care so much - we just want to see survivors of crime rise up in resilience and strength.

10. We know what we’ve signed up for.

And we’re ready, regardless of what we may face.
